How to Improve Your GPA in Q4: A Strategic Guide for High School Students and Parents

Spring is a busy time with graduations, sports, and recitals. Students and parents tend to be exhausted from a long school year of academics and activities. It might be tempting to give up on improving your grades, but now is the time to get strategic and set study goals for the remainder of the school year!

For high school students (or middle school students taking high school-level courses) a strategic approach now can make a meaningful difference in grades, GPA, and readiness for next year. At Learn Thrive Grow Academic Support, our in-home and virtual tutors work with K–12 and college students across Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland to help them finish strong. Read on for our top tips ...

For high school students (or middle school students taking high school-level courses) even a small GPA improvement in Q4 can strengthen your college applications and increase your eligibility for merit-based financial aid. If your school’s student information system doesn’t display your current GPA, consider using a weighted GPA calculator to track where you stand and develop a strategy for the rest of the year.

  • First, identify which grades have room for improvement and figure out what you need to earn in Q4 and on your final exam to bring up your GPA. Be sure to factor in the weighting of your classes, since honors and AP classes have an outsized impact on GPA, positive or negative.

  • Second, prioritize academic core classes over electives. Many colleges recalculate GPA using only core academic subjects, so a strong grade in math, science, English, or history carries more weight in your application than an elective.

  • Third, prioritize classes related to your intended college major. Admissions officers often pay close attention to performance in courses that align with what you plan to study.

Once you have identified the grades you want to improve, keep studying in all classes, but assess whether you need to spend more time and/or change your study approach in the target classes. You can’t expect a different result, without doing something differently. Note: if executive functioning (staying organized, knowing what and when to study, getting assignments in on time) is part of the challenge, that may require a different approach. Our in-home tutors and educational consultants are experienced in executive functioning support — feel free to reach out to discuss how we can help.

Many of our students told us they couldn’t find a free, weighted GPA calculator that saved their data, so we built one! Our free high school GPA calculator below lets you enter grades by quarter, set your final exam weight per class, and instantly see both your weighted and unweighted GPA across all four years of high school. Just bookmark this page and return on the same device and browser — it will remember your grades automatically.
